About the Assyrian Basketball League of Chicago

About

The Assyrian Basketball League is a highly-competitive recreational league in Chicago, Illinois. The league boasts over 100 players each season, bringing together adult males of all ages and skill levels. The leagues is equally committed to both the sport of basketball and its individual participants. We hope to provide an environment where all are welcomed to compete, excel as athletes, and practice good sportsmanship. ABL has become tradition to Chicago’s Assyrians.

Teams are organized by volunteer captains. The regular season usually runs a ten-week course, followed by playoffs and a championship game. At the end of the season, certain players are awarded titles including “Most Valuable Player” and “Rookie of the Year.” There are no formal practices, though many of our athletes choose to do so on their own. Each team participates in a game every Tuesday night during the season. There are a total of four seasons annually. Select ABL teams also compete at a national level.

All games are officiated by licensed referees. The ABL adheres to the official rules of the NCAA. Games are hosted at Feldman Park in Niles, Illinois. History

The Assyrian Basketball league was founded in 1996 by Billy Haido through the Assyrian Athletic Club of Chicago. It was well-received by the community, becoming very popular in a short amount of time. The league would spread quickly nationwide, inspiring the start of similar leagues in other parts of the country, including the Assyrian Basketball League of California, The Detroit Assyrian Basketball League, and the Assyrian Basketball League of Arizona. With the continued support of the Assyrian community, the league continues to thrive, as the tradition is passed on.
